In 1909, Bakelite was discovered by the Belgian-American chemist L.H Baekeland. Through an intensive series of processes, this material starts life as a liquid, turns into a solid, is ground into powder and then heated to achieve the shape desired. Considered to be the first plastic, Bakelite was very successful in industry by reason of its desirable properties - it is strong and resilient, lightweight and heat resistant, and produces very natural colors. Early uses included camera parts, telephones, insulators and fountain pens. The extensive efforts and experience required for molding and manufacturing Bakelite led to its eventual  dis-use and original Bakelite items are widely sought by today's collectors.
Visconti presents the first Bakelite fine writing collection of the modern age. The Monte Carlo Collection is destined to become the classic that its original counterparts from over 80 years ago have become.
