VISCONTI Monte Carlo Fountain Pen Mandarin Yellow Bakelite w/ Broad Steel NibYear: circa 1995
Made in Italy
Mandarin Yellow Bakelite with gold-colored trim.
Visconti Broad (B) steel nib.
The Monte Carlo was one of the first models Visconti produced and was one of the few bakelite pens manufactured in recent times.
In the early 1990s Visconti produced the Monte Carlo in this material to bring a vintage feel to a modern pen.
In 1909, Bakelite was discovered by the Belgian-American chemist L.H Baekeland. Through an intensive series of processes, this material starts life as a liquid, turns into a solid, is ground into powder and then heated to achieve the shape desired. Considered to be the first plastic, Bakelite was very successful in industry by reason of its desirable properties - it is strong and resilient, lightweight and heat resistant, and produces very natural colors. Early uses included camera parts, telephones, insulators and fountain pens. The extensive efforts and experience required for molding and manufacturing Bakelite led to its eventual dis-use and original Bakelite items are widely sought by today's collectors.
The concerned pen takes international cartridges and converters. A piston converter is included. Near Mint condition, it ships with the original Visconti box and papers. The pen has some storage wear on it, and came from a collection where most of the pens were never inked, or saw only minimal usage. Hairline scratches to the section (very frequent on this model).
The fountain pen measures approximately 139 mm long capped and 123 mm long uncapped.
