From NJ Home and Barn of 1860's
Used. 2-1/4 inch length
A garage find that I have had for over 40 years is this clump of 20 square shank nails in very fine condition. I saved them when we restored a central New Jersey farm house, (& 4 barns) that were built during the Civil War years.
The steel nail lengths are nominal 2-1/4 inches. I removed them with emphasis on keeping the nails straight. Surface rust today is as expected for nails made, (possibly hand forged???) maybe as far back
as 150 years ago. Paint on the nail heads is original. I have not done any testing to determine if the nails are wrought iron.
The above comments are based only one thing that is certain—the house and 4 barns were built during the Civil War. I am not aware of any post-Civil War renovation or modernization. Please be guided accordingly.
