Description
Lot of 12 Rectangular Shank NailsFrom NJ Home and Barn of 1860's
Used. 2-1/2 inch length
A garage find that I have had for over 40 years is this clump of 12 rectangular tapered- shank nails in very fine condition. I saved them when we restored a central New Jersey farm house, (& 4 barns) that were built during the Civil War years.
The steel nail lengths are nominal 2-1/2 inches. I removed them with emphasis on keeping the nails straight. Surface rust today is as expected for nails made, (possibly hand forged???) maybe as far back
as 150 years ago. I have not done any testing to determine if the nails are wrought iron. The original owner of the farm had horses for local traveling since he was a minister to nearby communities. I do not know that being 2-1/2 inch length if
these nails
would be used for horse-shoeing?
The above comments are based only one thing that is certain—the house and 4 barns were built during the Civil War. The house served as the parsonage and the barn housed cows, a bull and a team of horses. I am not aware of any post-Civil War renovation or modernization. Please be guided accordingly.
