FAQ About Lab Created Gems
Q.) What’s the difference between, Genuine, Real, Natural and Lab Created?
A.) Real - not artificial, fake, faux or synthetic.
Genuine - an actual gem with the identical physical and chemical makeup as a natural mined gem.
Natural – As occurring in nature. Natural gems are mined from the Earth. This process is expensive and labor intensive. Only a small percentage of the gems mined would qualify for making into faceted gems for jewelry. And an even smaller fraction of those gems would be flawless or nearly so. A near flawless one carat deep blue sapphire can command a price as high as an equivalent sized diamond. Actually, gem quality rubies, sapphires and emeralds are rarer than gem quality diamonds.
Lab Created - Lab created gems have the identical physical and chemical makeup as a natural earth mined gem. The same process of heat and pressure is used to produce a flawless or nearly flawless gem. A lab created ruby is the same hardness as an Earth mined ruby at 9 on the Mohs scale. It is one of the hardest gems next to a diamond which is a 10. In the lab, layers of material are “grown” onto a seed as impurities are added for the distinctive color of a stone for a particular region where its natural gem counterpart is mined. The same gem, ruby for example, may have several different colors and several different shades of the same color depending on the region of the world where it was mined. Sapphires are the same way. They can be light blue, royal blue, purple, orange, yellow, salmon and even clear to name a few. Emerald is made from beryl just like the gemstone aquamarine. Emerald gets its green coloring from trace amounts of chromium and/or vanadium. A 1-carat emerald appears larger than a 1-carat diamond because of its lower density. Emerald measures between 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness. In the cases of Rubies and Sapphires, the gems are made of corundum (aluminum oxide). The only difference is their color which is governed by the type and concentration of impurities introduced to the stone as it was “growing”.
Because of their near flawless nature, lab created gems are often mistaken as glass. In reality, only a certified gemologist can tell the difference and sometimes even then it can be difficult. It takes high magnification by sophisticated equipment and a trained eye to be able to tell. A fairly easy way to tell is examine the gem with a jeweler’s loop. If there are no inclusions (bubbles, fissures, tiny bits of other material) it’s probably lab created.
The bottom line is this: Lab created gems have the same look, sparkle, physical and chemical make up as natural gems so, they’re “genuine” just not natural. Because they are much less expensive to produce, they are considerably less expensive to buy. No one else but you has to know they aren’t natural but, they ARE REAL and they ARE GENUINE.
