For instance, i
f the first chord of a song is C Major, like the song chords: C Am F and G, transpose and improvise using D Major scale or D Major/m7 scale.  Usually, the first chord indicates the key.  If the chords of a song begin in Em, use F#minor or F#minor/Maj6 scales to improvise.
So, if the guitar or piano or the string section are playing in the key of C minor, you could improvise by transposing the notes to D minor.
