    Description

Replica Terracotta Haniwa Warrior Head in Helmet Figure, Japanese Funerary Sculpture, Made in Japan.  This clay warrior head is in good condition with a nice patina.  It's 10 1/2" tall, 7" wide and 7 1/2" deep. It's made of red terracotta and it weighs 5.61 pounds.  Haniwa were made for ritual use and as funerary objects during the Kofun period of the history of Japan. This one is a handcrafted replica in which mounds of coiled clay were built up to shape the figure layer by layer.  The bust is of a Samurai warrior in his protective helmet.  He has an expressionless face with a protruding nose & slit eyes & mouth.  Haniwa were placed not inside the tomb, but on top of the grave mound, a visible reminder of the deceased's presence there. Some scholars speculate that haniwa were also used to keep the soul of the dead from wandering away from the tomb.  It's an exquisite Haniwa that is sure to be a conversation piece in your house and it will look cool in your garden!
