    Description

Large Antique Dated 1890 Crete Greek Kard Knife Dagger Horn Hilt.
This is a Crete Kard. They have been, and continue to be, traditionally bound with the island nation, where they have been made since at least the 19th century. They are characterized by their dart-like shape, hollow-ground blade and clam-shell style bolsters. The grips are usually bone, bleached a brilliant white by a process known as “aspromaniko”, although examples with ivory and horn grips (such as this one) can also be found.
The grips of this example are decorated with small quality inserts and metal pins. The wide grip strap and bolsters are engraved silver The pommel consists of a round quality grip attached to a pair of tweezers housed within the hilt. The blade is inscribed with a scroll pattern and year 1890 CE. 1890 was an exciting time to be in Crete. Revolution was in the air. The Christian majority on Crete had sought independence from the Sublime Porte since Greek independence. Several previous revolts had all failed but had also won the Cretans a degree of autonomy. They wanted more. They wanted complete independence and events boiled over into the Cretan revolt of 1897-1898. Despite a fierce fight the revolt was suppressed. Nevertheless, they were able to secure their independence and the last Ottoman troops left Crete in November 1898.
