Description
Vintage Pair of Kutani Foo Dog (Fu Dog) or Lion Dog FigurinesOriginating and popular in Chinese Buddhism, Foo Dogs or Guardian Lions were thought to protect government buildings and officials' homes from spiritual influences and harmful people. Originally used in Imperial Chinese palaces and tombs, guardian lions later spread to other parts of Asia, including Japan, where they are referred to as Guardian Dogs.
These porcelain figurines are known as Shishi in Japan, or as Shisa in Okinawa, and play a prominent role in Feng Shui. Closed mouth Shisa face gateways or entrances and are thought to keep good spirits inside the home. Opened mouth Shisa fend away evil spirits.
The previous owner informed me that her parents purchased this pair new in Okinawa in the early 1970s. They appear to have been made in the Saiko-Kutani style marked by overglaze painting techniques, redder and more intricate designs and a gold gilding technique called kinran-de.
