"Revelation" Trombone by Frank Holton & Co., ElkhornComplete Outfit, Built 1919
Please read the entire description, and the AUCTION TERMS below, BEFORE bidding!
Greetings! I offer this outstanding example of Frank Holton's "Revelation" slide trombone. Serial # 45318 indicates production in 1919. This was Holton's top professional horn during the Jazz Age. It has a .505" bore (measured inside the lower inner slide leg stocking and slide-to-bell tenon), 7" brass bell. This instrument has Holton's Finish D, heavily silver plated, satin finish, with gold wash bell interior. There is no slide lock and no bell lock, just an old-style friction-fit tapered tenon and socket. This is a rather collectable example, having its complete original kit (except for warranty paperwork) which includes music lyre, cleaning rod, Holton #1 mouthpiece, dried-up glass bottle of Holton Electric Slide Oil, and original case in very nice condition for being almost 100 years old.
CONDITION:
Cosmetic condition is excellent with almost no wear to the factory plated finish. The outer handslide has no dings or dents. The inner slide has surface staining but no wear or damage. The copper-colored stockings are not worn–they are separate pieces made of "phosphor bronze", which Holton literature described as "the most frictionless metal known to man." The slide action is very good, just slightly scratchy, which will not doubt be improved with a good cleaning and polishing. The main tuning slide has a couple easily repairable dents. Otherwise the condition is remarkable for an instrument over 100 years old. The small spring latches on the case do not catch properly, a common problem with this type of vintage latch. The center latch does work. The instrument is sold AS-IS with no warranties. See pictures. WYSIWYG.
PLAYING QUALITIES:
Although I'm primarily a trumpet and French horn player, I do play a bit of trombone, and this instrument plays with a full, strident tone that cuts and will bark when pushed. The slide action is very good for a 104-year-old trombone. I think it would be a nice horn for swing and trad jazz playing. NOTE that I make no representations about its suitability for your intended use.
ACCESSORIES:
Original
case in very good condition, with a couple loose fitting blocks, one broken retaining tab, and original handle; Holton #1 mouthpiece; Lyre; Cleaning rod, Empty bottle of Holton Electric Valve Oil.

THE STRAIGHT DOPE:
I haven't ever seen a Holton Revelation trombone in this excellent shape, period. I think it could be a really fine player. With case and complete kit, it would make a great addition to your collection
. All sales FINAL unless I determine that I significantly misrepresented it. I'll be happy to answer any questions about the instrument itself. Thanks for looking and good luck bidding!
