    Description

I am selling a collection of antique chatelaine and jewelry items as seen in the last photo so please see my other offerings and check back!
    ABOUT:
Old and beautiful Victorian Mourning locket pendant with an incredible high relief and lifelike carving of a woman with an off the shoulder dress and grape leaves in her hair.  This is an antique piece that is thicker than your average locket with two compartments inside, Each side has a glass frame but one is cracked and the other is chipped so they may need to be glued in after putting your keepsakes or photos behind, or just removed completely.  The insides of the locket are also decorated.
Perhaps the experts out there could help me identify what type of fabrication this black material is, if it is Gutta Percha, bog oak, or vulcanite, etc? The woman definitely looks carved and then applied onto the cover, there is a lovely decorated  textured background behind the frames inside.  It does not feel cold to the touch like a jet or onyx stone.   Even the loop attached to the metal ring appears carved.
Either way, it is a wonderfully unique Antique piece dating from the 1800s to the turn of the century.   It is a real statement piece.
    Chain not included.
    MARKS:
No hallmarks that I could decipher.
    MEASUREMENTS:
It measures about 1 3/8 inches wide and hangs about 2 inches from the top of the clasp to the bottom.  When laid flat, it rises up about an inch tall with the very high relief carving.
    CONDITION:
One nick to the top smooth back cover that may have been done in the making.   The interior frames are a bit rough, one is cracked, the other is chipped and doesn't want to stay in place without glue. The locket hinge is tight and it opens nicely, it doesn't close with a loud snap, but it does remain closed when worn. Some discoloration from age, I was thinking it might look nice if it were oiled but that may be blasphemy on these old pieces so I will leave that to the buyer : ). Some surface wear and scratching, could use a good cleaning.
Due to age, please note this is not a mint condition item.
Still many years left in this old and rare beauty from an interesting period in history.
I dearly love, collect, use and sell antiques so please check out my other listings and thanks so much for stopping by my store!
