Description
The Yataghan is a distinctive and iconic sword that traces its origins back to the Ottoman Empire. Characterized by its curved blade and unique hilt, the yataghan served as both a weapon and a status symbol among Ottoman soldiers and elites. Its design was optimized for close combat, featuring a single-edged blade with a pronounced curve, ideal for slashing maneuvers. Hilts typically feature distinctive grips and ornate decoration, showcasing the craftsmanship and artistic flair of Ottoman artisans, and this example is no exception. It has massive "elephant ear" shaped grips, a gilt copper grip strap decorated with ribbed red corals and gilt copper bolsters. The 20" well-forged blade is slightly down curving, bi-fullered and decorated with silver inlay on both sides. One side bears the date AH 1261 (1845 CE). The leather-over-wood scabbard, including the spiral stitching, appears original. Good condition. An old repair to the bolsters and slight movement to the grips. Overall length: 27.25".The yataghan's versatility and aesthetic appeal ensured its enduring popularity, both on the battlefield and as a symbol of prestige and tradition in Ottoman society. Even today, the yataghan remains a celebrated artifact, revered for its historical significance and enduring legacy in martial culture.
