    Description

    Wonderful
antique Victorian gutta percha hand motif mourning brooch. Unsigned. Mid-late 1800s. Tests positive as gutta percha by rubbing finger vigorously over surface to reveal scent of rubber. Polished smooth on front side; left course on back side. Molding technique creates look of having been carved by hand in very high relief. Woman's hand bent downward in mourning holds Victorian symbol for long life, the shaft of wheat. A floral garland drapes below hand. Note the wrap-around snake bracelet at wrist, symbolizing life eternal, which has the head of a duck. Securely anchored brass tone metal "C" clasp and pin stem. No chips or cracks. Very small cut mark on back side of brooch just under wrist, not visible on front side. Very good condition.
