PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This is an antique Victorian 21K yellow gold mourning locket measuring 1 3/8 inches (36.9 MM) long including the jump ring by 7/8 inch (24.1 MM) wide. Mourning lockets, which replaced mourning rings, date back centuries ago (C.1600's) and were a less expensive way to mourn loved ones. Instead of costly commissioned painted portraits of a dearly departed family member, their hair was incorporated in these locket style pendants. Once the camera was invented, mourning jewelry was eventually replaced with photographs. This locket contains human hair and curled threads that have loosened over time. The locket is prong set on the back in two applied horseshoes with ten (10) round faceted emeralds totaling .15CT and with ten (10) 1.5 MM seed pearls. Three emeralds have minor chips that are not overtly obvious when worn, and the pendant shows dings and dents due to age. This is mentioned for accuracy. The locket is engraved "Mabel from E.T. & A.H. Feb 2nd 1867." Although not marked, the pendant is thoroughly tested and 100% guaranteed 21K. It weighs 6.8 grams. 28093
