Antique Student Field Brass Microscope Cast Iron 18 19 Working VintageFor sale is an antique brass microscope that has seen 100 years of use. Every scratch, oxidation, and rust spot tells a century worth of tales. All structural components and optics are intact. The microscope assembly includes the microscope itself, a stainless steel mount, and beautifully crafted cast iron floor plate. The assembly can be taken apart and put together. Because the microscope features a relatively simple assembly: it means that this was used as a field microscope or a student training microscope. The item was not restored in any way shape or form, giving it a beautiful patina.
Purpose:
Because this microscope doesn’t have a lot of additional components (bells and whistles), it was likely not used for advanced applications. Most likely it was used as a field microscope or a student microscope. The field microscope theory works because it is easy to take a part and store. The student microscope theory works because it is simple and easy to use.
Rarity
:
Although the assembly is simple, there is no other microscope on the on-line market like it. This microscope is sure to add a unique addition to your collection.
Age of Item:
Manufactured between 1890 – 1910. The “rough” “imperfect” “bumpy” nature of the cast iron work on the stand reveal the “old world” manufacturing techniques that were used to make this microscope. Based on similar listings this microscope is dated between late 1800 and early 1900. Roughly 1890 – 1910.
Condition/Patina:
Patina
: Absolutely wonderful patina. A picture of this microscope should be used to define the word “patina” in the dictionary. There were absolutely no attempts to restore this microscope. The brass has a nice dull sheen to it. The cast iron has some surface rust on it, without being rusted through or damaged. The groves on the variable knows have dark dirt buildup in their grooves (from scientists spinning them for 100 years). There are no structural cracks. Nothing is damaged, just aged well.
Optics
: the optical lenses have some dirt on them on the inside of the microscope. The lenses themselves have no cracks and are all present and firmly affixed in their places. This item was likely decommissioned because of this dirt buildup and sat on a shelf allowing it to be preserved all these years. On a positive note: you can tell that these cloudy optics show that the item was never disassembled. Just another piece of evidence showing that no one ever disassembled this microscope in any way shape or form. It was left untouched.
Mechanical Functions:
Everything works. You can use the focus adjustment knob without any problem. The tightening knobs can be loosened to take the microscope apart, but also tightened to make sure it holds firmly together. The stainless steel mount can be easily screwed in or screwed out of the cast iron floor plate.
