Antique, circa 1900-1920s, 4 inches long, Japanese Kutani porcelain nemuri neko / sleeping cat figure. Predominantly glazed in a dark coral red and a rich, deep blue, and embellished with the raised glaze details typical of the moriage technique. Small, but heavily potted with a small firing hole, signed underneath with painted kanji, “ku” and “tani”. I purchased this about 20 years ago in Los Angeles from one of those beautiful little Asian antique shops that look like they should be in a book. Its age at the time was given as one hundred years (1900), but I think it could be from as late as the 1920s. It has no import marks ( such as “Made in Japan”), which suggests this beautiful little cat was originally purchased in Japan.
