    Description

Antique Figural Bog Oak Pin Cushion
    Circa 1890s * Irish
This nice little kettle / pot shaped pin cushion is carved of bog oak and dates to the late 19th or early 20th century. The sides are carved all around with shamrocks and a harp and it sits on three peg feet. A wire handle is at the top. Bog oak is known for being incredibly hard and difficult to carve.
The cushion is velvet and is original. It's worn but intact and has lots of old steel pins. The condition of the bog oak is excellent with no chips or cracks. It measures about 2" high (not counting the handle) and is 1 3/4" in diameter. A bog oak pot pincushion of a slightly different form is shown on p. 157 of Gay Ann Rogers' book
