    Description

Antique Sterling Silver & Velvet Pincushion Sewing Box
    English * Hallmarked 1906
This little box is wood covered with velvet and has a pincushion on the top. Surrounding that is an ornate sterling silver frame. The scrolling design has piercing so the velvet shows through. It has the English sterling hallmarks for Birmingham 1906 and the maker's mark for Samuel M Levi. The velvet has fading but is all intact and still has a lot of its nap. The silver is in great condition with no loss. It measures 2 5/8" square and 1 7/8" high.
It was being used as a sewing box, probably on a dresser. The contents include a tiny pair of steel scissors, a packet of Morris & Yoeman's needles, a small wooden spool with blue silk and a sterling silver thimble. The scissors
    have flipped shanks and
are 2 5/8" long. They are lace scissors which means one tip is rounded.
They were used for Carrickmacross lace which became popular when introduced to Ireland about 1820. They also function well as embroidery scissors. The blades are tight with intact points and they cut perfectly to the tips. The thimble has an engraved band and is also stamped with the English sterling hallmarks for Birmingham 1906. It has the maker's mark for James Swann. It has wear but the overall condition is nice, in round with no holes, repairs or other damage. It's about an American size 9-10 (16.1 mm diameter opening).
