    Description

    This is an exquisite example of an antique 18th centuryTurkish Ottoman Yatagan, also called Varsak, short sword.
    The hilt of the sword is made of bone, likely bovine.
    The grip features gilt copper mounts adornedin a detailed Balkan filigree (ornamental wire) and are set with sixmauve-colored corals.
    A seventh coralsetting is apparent.
    The Ricasso (at the base of the blade) is encased withshaped panels and inset with two ruby-colored jewels.
    The single-edged steel blade is cut with two narrow fullerson each face and slender grooves on the spine.
    The characteristically curved blade is ornamented with a silver inlaid Arabicscript on one side, and a silver inlaid six-pointed star of David or KhātimSulaymāni (Solomon's Seal) in a small round cartouche on the other side.
    The extraordinary scabbard is the product of extensivehandwork, likely hand-worked in silver.
    Theinterior of the scabbard appears to be hollowed bone.
