From my Collection: Here we have a
RARE
1750's - 1800's Bone & Brass Entomologist’s Field Pocket Magnifier, Flea Glass, Simple Microscope Kit.
This is superb example of a
botanist's, naturalist's or
entomologist’s simple magnifier / flea glass / flower microscope with Bone handle that
were carried by Gentlemen in their pockets when traveling out into the field.
There is no makers mark on this instrument. This handy little kit looks like it originally had 4 small lenses. There are currently 2 remaining that can be screwed into the frame (one large magnifier to look at larger specimens and a one with a very small high magnification lens for focusing on the very tip of the specimen spike.) Both are in very good, clear condition.
It has very tiny knurled edges on both sides
. The turned Bone handle has a very nice shape. The handle is removable from the fitting. There are no cracks in this handle. The central shaft is fitted with hinged and swiveling specimen spike. The opposite end has a tiny forceps which has lost its points. This kit also comes with a beautiful set of "lady's-legs" forceps to assist in positioning specimens. This instrument is 5" long. Everything fits in the red Moroccan leather covered, compartmentalized box which is lined in gray silk / felt. The box is missing one of its brass catches. Box measures It is approx. 4-1/2" x 2-1/2" x 1". No owner marks.
